Vranov – Pantheon

Above Mala Skála, traces of a medieval castle meet the romantic idea of a memorial site. Added to this is a view of the Jizera valley.

Vranov arose on a steep rocky ridge above the right bank of the Jizera. Later, its ruins were transformed into the Pantheon: in the 19th century, František Zachariaš Römisch created a memorial site with monuments and commemorations of personalities. The characteristic summer castle therefore does not belong to the original medieval castle. Distinguishing the two layers is the main key to why the site looks like this.

Two stories on one rocky ridge

When visiting, first try to look for traces of the practical use of the rock: space for buildings, passages or carved parts. Then pay attention to the memorial elements. One time you are looking at a place intended for defense, the other time you are looking at a landscape prepared for remembrance. At the same time, the view into the valley will show you how strongly the shape of the terrain here determined the possibilities of movement and construction.

An idea for your day

Leave two hours for your stay and account separately for the ascent from Mala Skála. For a longer walking day, you can consider Frýdštejn; but first check the entire journey and return to the starting point.
