Hrad Frýdštejn
A cylindrical tower emerges from the rocks as a landmark of the entire castle. Frýdštejn is a small lesson in building in terrain that one could not compare to oneself.

The ruins of Frýdštejn lie above the village of the same name in Maloskalsk. Its prominent part is the preserved cylindrical tower on a high rock. At a closer look, however, the relationship of the masonry to the sandstone bedrock is also interesting: the castle premises had to respond to the shape of the individual rocks. It is not a monument that you can understand only from the frontal view of one facade.
Watch the castle from the bottom up
Start with the shape of the terrain and only then get an idea of the former buildings. Where could a rock replace a wall? Why is the tower in the most prominent place? These questions are a good program for children too, if they have time to stop and watch. Take access to the tower and other parts under a truly open visiting regime, not as a guaranteed part of every visit.
An idea for your day
Allow two hours for a leisurely visit. If you want to continue on foot to Vranov, consider the elevation gain and whether you have to return the same way. An alternative is to leave the next castle for another day and pay your full attention to Frýdštejn.
Things to know
What is the main dominant feature of Frýdštejn?
A cylindrical stone tower built on a prominent rocky site. The ruin also shows the use of sandstone for castle premises.
Can the trip be combined with the Pantheon?
Both monuments belong to Maloskalsk. A walking connection requires your own route plan, enough time and a well-thought-out return.
