Hrad Rotštejn

Here, the rock is not just the base of the castle. In Rotštejn, natural stone and human construction intertwine so closely that it is worth looking for their border.

Rotštejn is located near Klokočské skály near Turnova. Parts of the palace and spaces set into the sandstone remain from the castle; later residents also used the rock for other carved dwellings. Therefore, the place does not only tell the story of a noble residence. It also recalls how the abandoned building and its surroundings could change according to the needs of people who came later.

How to recognize a castle in a rock

When inspecting, focus on the transitions between the carved surface and the masonry. Try to imagine roofs and wooden parts where today you mainly see stone and free space. However, do not assume that every opening belongs to the same era. On-site interpretation will help distinguish layers that easily blend together at a glance. Klokočské skály can then complement a view of similar material in a more natural form.

An idea for your day

Allow two hours to visit and stop around. If you want to continue to the rocks, choose a specific route in advance; the castle and the entire rocky area are not one short sightseeing circuit.

Things to know

Is Rotštejn part of the Klokočské rocks?

The castle stands next to this rocky area and is a suitable historical addition to a walking visit to Klokočsko.

Why check the weather before visiting?

Sandstone steps and areas are problematic when wet, and castle operations may be limited by weather. The opening date alone may not be enough.
